What is a Mentor Mom?

Mentor Moms are Christian women in our community who have kids (young or grown), spare time, and have the desire and ability to make a difference in the life of teenage parents. They have the courage to make relationships with at-risk teenagers who are wrestling with the mixture of adolescence and parenthood. Our Mentor Moms provide lots of hugs and friendship for the teen parents and their babies.

Mentor Moms complete a profile sheet and are matched with a teen mom based on common interests. The staff puts great prayer into the matches asking the Lord for wisdom and direction. We ask that both Mentor and Mentee commit to the program for 4 months and agree to meet once a week for at least an hour. We understand that some weeks this will not be possible, but ask that they at least try to connect by telephone.

There are many activities to consider for those weekly meetings. The Mentor Mom can attend Momma Club with the teen on Thursday nights. Mentors could go to their school to have lunch, invite their teen mom to their home for dinner or to do laundry or just have her along for a trip to Walmart. If the Mentor has small children, it is wonderful to include the teen and her child in family activities. Teens learn as much or more by "watching' than by listening.

Our volunteers must go through a minimal screening process. Please complete the volunteer application forms and mail or fax back to me.
